Use a Library

If you live in the state where the adoption occurred, do some research there in person. When you live in another state, the local librarian can help in your search.

Here is a link for libraries online. Many libraries have online Web sites, and you can contact their librarians online. They may be able to access many useful resources, including some of the items mentioned below.

Here are some of the resources that may be available at a library:

  • City directories’
  • Old telephone books;
  • Helpful and trained research librarians;
  • Books on family history and names;
  • Newspaper archives
  • Yearbooks or annuals.

Through the Interlibrary Loan Program, libraries often have the ability to order specific books or other resources from another library. If you need a resource that is not available at your local library, consider asking the librarian to order it for you.
