If you decide to make your first contact by mail, I suggest including a self-addressed postcard for the person to send back to you. It could help you to get a quicker response, and reassure you that your letter got to your birth family member. Offer choices for them to check off the response they choose. Be creative and use what seems appropriate to you.

Maybe, asking them to fill in how soon they will be in touch is going overboard. Use your own judgment.
Another suggestion when sending a letter is to request a delivery confirmation or via certified mail. Be sure to mark the letter personal and confidential as well.
