Postcard To Include With First Letter

If you decide to make your first contact by mail, I suggest including a self-addressed postcard for the person to send back to you. It could help you to get a quicker response, and reassure you that your letter got to your birth family member. Offer choices for them to check off the response they choose. Be creative and use what seems appropriate to you.

Postcard to Include with First Contact

I look forward to hearing from you. Please complete & send this back to me if you would. _____I am the person that you are looking for, but I need some time. I will be in touch in ____ days ____weeks _____months. _____You have the wrong person. _____You have the correct party, but I do not wish contact because__________________________________________________________________. _____Other.______________________________________________________________.

Maybe, asking them to fill in how soon they will be in touch is going overboard. Use your own judgment.

Another suggestion when sending a letter is to request a delivery confirmation or via certified mail. Be sure to mark the letter personal and confidential as well.
