Possible Outcomes of Search

Try to prepare yourself emotionally to handle whatever comes your way. One major reason people fear searching is that there is no certainty as to the outcome. Most fear the unknown and/or change. However, instead of dire “opening Pandora’s box” warnings, consider embracing the fictional character Forrest Gump’s view of life instead. The classic line, “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are gonna get….” can apply to adoption search. You do not know what you will get when you undertake a search, and you need to be willing to accept the risk.

Live each day as you would climb a mountain….Climb slowly, steadily, enjoying each passing moment; and the view from the summit will serve as a fitting climax for the journey. ~ Harold V. Melchert

At the end of your search, you may:

  • Find answers to your questions;
  • Find love and acceptance;
  • Discover that your birth family member is no longer alive;
  • Fail to locate your birth family member; or
  • Find a birth family member who refuses contact.
